I love the detail captured in this photo. What a great find and the photographer is to be commended for noticing this small scene. The lines in the image are beautiful, and all the tones of neutral colors work very well together.

Magical Light- Elk River Falls

Judges Comments

Of all the waterfall images, this one captured a dramatic, complex and challenging scene from a technical standpoint.  Areas of shade with areas of sunlight, all properly exposed with no lights blown out or darks underexposed.  It also captures more of the environment here, leading my eye around the image to look at all the different elements.

The amazing light is what draws me to this image. Additionally, I like the composition with the main waterfall slightly off center. The photographer also selected a good shutter speed for the amount of water flow.

3rd Place - Steve Dondero

This image tells a great story of the change of seasons. I like the repeating golds in the top of the image and then the splattering of color repetition below. The reds in the foliage provide a nice separation. The motion acheived through shutter speed selection is perfect. It would have been easy to misjudge the timing, which would have impacted the feeling. It is well composed with the darker weight of the water filling 2/3 of the frame. I also appreciate the use of a polarizing filter allowing the viewer to see the stream bottom. The underwater rocks add nicely to the image.
